Mendham Borough, NJ

A picturesque Colonial village nestled in rolling hills and lush with deciduous trees, Mendham Borough is a quiet and upbeat town of about 5000 people.

Mendham Borough has a K - 8 district comprised of the new Hilltop School, K - 4, and Mountain View School, 5 - 8. Grades 9 - 12 attend West Morris Mendham High School, recently ranked 4th by New Jersey Monthly magazine. Mendham boasts one of the few International Baccalaureate programs in the state.

The Village Shopping Center on the eastern edge of the Borough serves residents of both the Borough and the Township. It is a place to meet neighbors while food shopping, or finding some needed gadget or goodie. There is also a well-stocked book store, an Apothecary that doubles as a general store staffed by the owner and family, a florist and gift shop, dry cleaner, jewelry store, liquor store, several restaurants featuring cuisine from sushi to pizza slices to steaks, and banks. Behind the shopping center is Mendham Health and Racquet Club, "one of New Jersey's largest and most complete sport and fitness centers for the whole family."

An historic district comprises the center of the Borough. The crossroads' four corners have their original structures lending a quaint charm to the historic shopping area. This village business district offers antique shops, jewelers, interior decorators, gift shops, a spa, hair salon, nail salon, La Famiglia for gourmet Italian for food items, The Black Horse Pub and Tavern, a deli, dry cleaner, drug store, computer services, banks and other services.

Annual civic events include the Labor Day Weekend celebration sponsored by The Pastime Club which supports recreational activities in the area. The Labor Day celebration features a carnival, child friendly games and contests, area fire company’s competition, band concert and culminates in a Main Street parade and evening fireworks on Labor Day.

An annual spring event is the Rotary Club of The Mendhams' Antique Show held at Mendham High School on a March weekend. The Mendham Business Association sponsors a holiday season Holly Walk with merchants offering refreshments and prizes to shoppers and a house tour organized by the Friends of the Mendham Library.

The area has a long history dating back to when the Lenni-Lenape Indians migrated to New Jersey from the "North Country" crossing the Mississippi River. Though the exact time the Lenni-Lenape Indians settled here is uncertain, people have lived in New Jersey for at least ten-thousand years.
